Women's Jiu-Jitsu in a Safe Environment
Women are most welcome at Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu academy CAZA BJJ here on the Sunshine Coast.
Frequently Asked Questions
- Is BJJ good for self defence?
Yes! Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is the most practical martial art you can use to defend against grabbing, choking and restraint. - Are there any women's only classes?
Yes, twice per week (Noosa). These are great when you are starting our in BJJ especially. Still, most female members train in regular classes. - Can I train only with women?
BJJ classes always include sparring, which means approximately five different partners per class. Sometimes there are not enough female members present to limit yourself to females only at regular classes. - Are there many females at CAZA?
Yes. We have quite a few female members at varying ages and skill levels, and the number is steadily growing. - What if I feel uncomfortable?
If, at any time, you don't feel comfortable performing a new technique, you can skip it. You will never be compelled to do anything when training at CAZA.
Why BJJ is great for women?
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a truly effective martial art. Because we focus on defending against (and also attacking) chokes, grabbing, being physically restrained and other close-quarters attacks, the skills you learn are highly effective self defence techniques.
BJJ students quickly learn that size and strength on not nearly as important as skill and technique. A smaller person can easily defeat a larger, more aggressive person when they are skilled in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
There is no striking in BJJ so you don't have to worry about facial injuries.
Can I compete at BJJ tournaments?
Absolutely! This can be an incredibly useful experience as it takes your BJJ game to a whole new level.
CAZA has a strong competition team and our female members are very successful. Our members compete throughout the year on the Queensland Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Circuit and at several other organisation's events.
If you are thinking about testing yourself in BJJ competition, CAZA will support you all the way. We would love to have you join our women's team here on the Sunshine Coast.
What is a first BJJ lesson like?
Going to a gym for the first time might seem like a daunting idea, but it need not be. Read our blog post about a typical first Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu class to get an idea of what to expect.
You are welcome to come in and watch a few lessons if you would like to get a feel for our gym or meet our coaches.
Of course, we also offer a free trial** when you are ready to give it a go!
BJJ For Women Gets Even Better!
Let's take a closer look at why joining a women's BJJ class might be great for you.
Self defence - tick!
As mentioned above, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is one of the most effective self defence martial arts skills you can develop. If self defence is a concern for you, there is no better skillset to acquire.
At every Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu class, you will get to practice with training partners and apply the new skills as you learn them. This will not only reinforce your belief in your new self defence skills, it will also turn them into reflex-like responses.
An interesting point here is that there are few, if any, other martial arts that teach techniques that consider the grabbing of clothing (or your uniform). Being able to handle this sort of attack is crucial in a self defence situation.
Get in shape fast
One of the great things about BJJ training is that you supercharge your fitness levels as a bonus. You find that you are so engrossed in the training that you don't realise just how much energy you burn off during each training session.
For example, there is an incredible amount of core work needed to practice this sport. But don't worry if you don't have that right now. You will develop a rock solid core in no time - you just need to keep coming in and learning new BJJ techniques!
In fact, if you train in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu several times a week and really put in the effort, you may even find that avoiding weight loss is difficult. Imagine that!
Women's only classes
CAZA Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in Noosa is currently running two women's only sessions per week (see the class timetable). If you don't think you'd be comfortable training with males, at this stage at least, these are the perfect BJJ classes for you.
There is no stigma here. It is perfectly normal for women starting BJJ to choose these classes if they want to feel safe. Our male members are lovely guys, so you'll soon discover that joining a mixed class is no big deal, when you are ready. Train with other women until then.
Even if you are comfortable training in the mixed classes, you are still welcome to train in the women's only classes too.
