The instructors:
This fundraiser is happening thanks to the selfless support of 3 black belts and 1 brown belt who have put their hand up and volunteered their time. These are some of the good guys in the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu community here in Australia.
- Lucas Venezia from Temple BJJ
- Shane Moore from Infinity Maroochydore
- Cheyne Douglas from Caza BJJ Noosa
- Rafael Miyashiro from Legacy BJJ Maroochydore
Each of these guys has a ton of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu experience and plenty to offer anyone who will be at this seminar. Regardless of your rank, you will get something out of this session which includes two hours of instruction and technique, and then an hour of rolling.
Here is the story…
Dan Hannay is a young purple belt with us here at CAZA Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in Noosa. He helps coach kids classes when the need arises and is well-liked by everyone, including ‘drop-ins’ at our gym. Dan is one of those guys who goes out of his way to ensure visitors feel welcome. Good intentions are not always rewarded it seems, and now it is he who needs some help.
Unfortunately, Dan’s wife, Sammi, was diagnosed with Functional Neurological Disorder (FND) in November 2019 after the loss of feeling and movement in her body. Physiotherapy helped to get her walking again, but she continued to have chronic pain, swollen lymph nodes, muscle twitches, fatigue and numbness in the face.
By chance, Sammi saw a post from a tourist site she visited 11 months before she became sick warning about Lyme disease. After looking into it, Sammi found that all of her symptoms were matching a late stage of the disease. Unfortunately, she didn’t know that she may have been affected and should be looking out for the early symptoms after travelling. Sure enough, a blood test confirmed that she did indeed have Lyme disease.
Lyme disease is recognised internationally, but not in Australia because the ticks that carry the disease have not been found here. This is why getting proper treatment in Australia is so hard.
Sammi and Dan have a young family with a beautiful 3-year-old daughter. At this point Sammi can no longer work and now finds it hard to care for their little girl. Even simple day to day chores around the house can be far too demanding.
Dan has been working long hours to try and pay the bills while juggling the house repayments and looking after their 3-year-old. They also have to find the money needed for Sammi to travel overseas and get the treatment she needs.
How you can help
Please help us to raise the funds needed to get Sammi the help she needs so she can continue living a normal life and get back to work. All you need to do is attend the seminar for just $50.
We realise that you are busy too, but we really hope you can find the time to make it to Maroochydore and take part in this awesome event. The BJJ community is strong on the Sunshine Coast and we think that this is the best that way we can help this young family while having fun along the way.
You can also donate via the GoFundMe page.
Big thanks!
A big thanks go to the four coaches listed above who will lead this seminar. Your willingness to help without any hesitation is appreciated by the Hannay family more than you know.
Also, thanks go to Brooke Mendes Dos Santos for organising this fundraiser and Infinity Martial Arts at Maroochydore for hosting the seminar.
See you Sunday!
